Go Patriots!!!

As I said, “Go Patriots!”. Due to their presence in the Super Bowl this Sunday, there will be no club meeting that night. Enjoy the game, the commercials, and the Patriot’s fourth Super Bowl win in 11 years!

Gold at Kansas City NAC

Once more, our saber coach had a stellar performance at the Kansas City NAC this past weekend in the Veteran’s 70+ Mens Saber. John Terninko had a relatively poor pool again (similar to his pool round at the Veteran’s World Championships, where he ended up third), and a terrific set of direct elimination bouts. At the end of the day, John was fencing the current 70+ world champion, Marvin Fine, for the gold. And John prevailed, winning the event 10-3.
In the past 12 months, Terninko has won two NACs, took third in the Summer Nationals, and won a bronze medal at the Veteran World Championships. Congratulations, John!

Seacoast Fencer Going to the World Championships

John Terninko is currently the number one ranked fencer in the United States in Veterans 70+ men’s saber. As such, John will represent the United States at the Veterans World Championships in Porec, Croatia, on Wednesday, September 28. He achieved this with his gold medal finish at the Detroit NAC in March, and his two third place finishes in the October NAC and at the Summer National Championships in July. Our congratulations to John for a superb year of fencing, and good luck at the World Championships!

Two Gold at Unclassified Meet on February 12

Seacoast Fencing Club had a great day at the FIRST Robotics fundraising tournament at our club in Manchester this past weekend. Our fencers took two of the three gold medals, and one event had an all Seacoast final! Marcus Pullo, who trains at our Rochester facility, won the Unclassified Mixed Foil, showing remarkable calm and patience in all his bouts, and excellent fencing. The head coach (and proud father) was overheard by the directors saying “He is a lot more patient than I’ve ever been.” The directors and Seacoast fencers nearby agreed. The Unclassified Mixed Epee was won by Morgan Baker, who now trains at both our club locations, defeating teammate Steve Mahar, who took silver. Morgan was also third in the Mixed Foil. Jackie Mazzone and Randi Sansoucie, both from our Rochester club, tied for third in the Women’s Foil Unclassified. Overall, Seacoast took half the medals in each event that day.
The tournament was filmed by Bladework, a reality/documentary TV show that has featured Seacoast head coach, Chris Pullo in a weekly segment teaching fencing to one of the participants, Nick Apostolides. Never having held a foil before, Nick had 12 lessons, and competed in this tournament, finishing 14th. Watch (or record) the final episode this Friday at 8:00 am on NBC Sports New England. Check out the website www.Bladework.tv
A great day of fencing, and we raised nearly $300 for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology), an international robotics competition started here in New Hampshire by Dean Kamen (probably best known as the inventor of the Segway), that now has over 15,000 high school teams worldwide. Their world championship will be held this April in St. Louis, MO.

Seacoast on TV!

Seacoast Fencing Club will be on television starting at 8:00 am, Friday, November 26! Head coach Chris Pullo will be teaching a new student in a reality show over the next 13 weeks on “Bladework”. He will be on the segment “Gone Fencing” on the half hour show, as he teaches a totally inexperienced fencer the game we all love. After 12 lessons, the student will compete in a novice tournament to showcase his newly aquired skills.
The show will be broadcast on NBC Sports Universal- Boston, and will show on Comcast on channel 288, on Metrocast channel 283, and Verizon FIOS on channel 292. It is also available via antenna on channel 50.2.

You can follow the progress of the show on its website, www.bladework.tv, and on twitter and facebook

Bronze Medal at the Cincinnati NAC!

Seacoast sent three fencers to the Cincinnati NAC last weekend, and one came home with a medal! John Terninko finished third in the Veteran 70+ Men’s Saber. He fenced well in the pool, and in his direct elimination bouts, but lost to the eventual winner in his semi-final bout. This is his second consecutive third place finish at a national competition. Congratulations, John.
Seacoast’s good results span the generations, however. In division competition, 14 year old Charles Stine won the Unclassified Mixed Foil in Portland two weeks ago, and earned his E rating. It was a great meet, with 21 fencers from Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. His only loss was in the pools, and defeated the number one seed in the semi-finals. Well done, Charles.
Also at that tournament, Kevin Clough took second place in the Veterans Mixed Foil. In that event, with fifteen fencers he avenged his only pool loss by defeating that fencer in the semifinals, but lost in the finals 7-10.
A great two week span for Seacoast, with three generations of fencers winning bronze, silver, and gold medals at both local and national events!

Gold at the New Hampshire Open!

Nicole Chiang, Seacoast’s 15 yrs old fencer who trains in both Rochester and Manchester, won two events at the New Hampshire Open this Saturday, September 18. In Women’s Foil, Nicole lost to Dianna Hohensee (who trains in Manchester once a week) in the pools, 2-5, but defeated her in the gold medal bout, 15-12. She followed this with a gold medal in Women’s Epee.
Jacob Pentheny only lost one bout in the Mixed Foil, but that was while battling for the gold medal, where he lost to his A rated opponent. Yang Tang, who trained for six years with Seacoast before attending UNH, was third in the Mixed Epee, and earned his C 2010. Ida Choy finished 3rd in the Women’s Foil event.
So it was a stellar day for Seacoast Fencers- two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. Congratulations to all our fencers who competed this weekend.
Remember, Seacoast is hosting a D meet in Manchester next Sunday, September 26. Sign up now!

Seacoast Sweeps the Youth Division Championships

The Northeast Division Youth Fencing Championships were held today in Concord, NH, drawing the best young fencers from Maine and New Hampshire. Seacoast Fencing Club dominated the youth foil events, sweeping the Y-12 foil, and taking the top two spots in Y-10 as well. Christian Thayer, the number one seed out of the pools, won the Y12 Mixed Foil Championship, defeating his Seacoast teammate Ethan Donahue in the gold medal bout. Cameron Ahlstrom tied for third with Connor Haugh.

Seacoast Fencing Club members also took gold and silver in the Y-10 Mixed Foil Championships. Will Chiang, age 8, defeated Josh Fellows in the final.

Christian Thayer and Cameron Ahlstrom train at Seacoast Fencing Club’s Rochester facility, while Connor Haugh and Josh Fellows train at Seacoast’s building in Manchester. Will Chiang and Ethan Donahue train at both locations.

Y14 and U16 National Qualifier

Seacoast Fencing Club in Rochester hosted the Northeast Division Championships and national qualifier for fencers 15 years old and younger last weekend. The top 25% of the competitors are now eligible to compete at the National Championships this July in Atlanta, GA. Seacoast continued it’s 20 year streak of sending the most fencers to the Nationals, this year qualifying eight fencers from its two facilities in Rochester and Manchester, NH.
The top fencer for Seacoast was Nicole Chiang, of Hampton, winning both the U16 women’s foil and Y14 epee, and finishing second in two other events. Peter Shellenberger, of New Boston, won the U16 men’s epee, and was second in the Y14 epee. Charles Stine, of Lee, won the Y14 men’s foil. The Pentheny twins, from Litchfield, both qualified in U16 men‘s foil, with Jacob second, and Aaron third. The other Seacoast fencers who qualified for the Summer Nationals are Johanna Ebers and Emily Benz, both from Hollis, and Sucheta Tamragouri friom Nashua, all in Y14 women’s foil.
